Traveling to campus

More than 15,000 graduates, family members, and friends travel to Athens, Georgia each year for a series of UGA Commencement events celebrating and honoring the graduating class.  We hope that the information presented below along with our Frequently Asked Questions section will help you as you plan your visit. The main UGA website also contains a helpful information and our Visitors Center is staffed with knowledgeable UGA staff and students who are happy to provide any information guests may need regarding campus, local accommodations, or special events.

Traveling by air

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is located 80 miles from the Visitors Center. Average travel time between the airport and the center is one-and-one-half hours, though travel time may be affect by Atlanta traffic. There is scheduled ground shuttle service between Hartsfield-Jackson and various points in Athens. For more information or to make a reservation, please visit AAA Airport Express (800/354-7874) or Groome Transportation (706/410-2363). Rental car service is also available.

  Directions from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to UGA

  1. Upon leaving the airport, take Interstate 85 North.
  2. Follow I-85 to Georgia Highway 316 (Exit 106).
  3. Proceed east on GA 316 for approximately 40 miles until you see signs for Athens Perimeter (GA Loop 10). Important: Make sure not to exit at the exit for Bogart/Monroe at US Highway 78.
  4. Following the “University of Georgia/Lexington/Hartwell” sign at the junction of GA 316 and the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10), bear right onto the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10).
  5. Continuing on Athens Perimeter (Loop 10), proceed to and exit at College Station Road (Exit 7).
  6. Turn left onto College Station Road.
  7. After passing under the bridge, proceed through two traffic lights and take a right onto East Campus Rd. UGA's East Campus will be on your right; UGA's South Campus will be on your left.

Athens-Ben Epps Airport, Athens

Athens-Ben Epps Airport offers flights to and from Atlanta and Nashville, TN via Georgia Skies. Local taxi service is available for transportation to and from Ben Epps Airport. Rental car service is also available.

  Directions from Athens-Ben Epps Airport to the Visitors Center

  1. Upon leaving the airport, turn left onto Winterville Road.
  2. Continue on Winterville Road until it ends at Lexington Road (US Highway 78).
  3. Turn right onto Lexington Road (US 78) and proceed three additional traffic lights.
  4. At the third traffic light, turn left onto the Athens Perimeter (GA Loop 10).
  5. Continue on the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10) to Exit 7 and exit onto College Station Road.
  6. Turn right onto College Station Road.
  7. Proceed through the next traffic light and the Visitors Center will be on your right in the Four Towers Building.

From the North

  1. Take I-85 South to Exit 149, US 441 in Commerce, Georgia. 
  2. Turn left onto US 441 and travel approximately 20 miles. As you approach Athens you will drive under the Athens Perimeter Loop highway and continue into Athens.
  3. At the first traffic signal, turn right onto College Avenue and follow College Avenue until it ends at Broad Street in downtown Athens.
  4. Turn right onto Broad Street.
  5. Travel one block to Lumpkin Street and turn left onto Lumpkin Street.
  6. Travel approximately 1 mile to Baxter Street.
  7. Turn left into the Tate Center parking lot for hourly pay parking.

From the South (US 441 or Georgia 15)

  1. Take US 441 North or Georgia 15 North through Watkinsville, Georgia to Athens.
  2. Turn right onto Loop 10 (Athens Perimeter Loop highway).
  3. Take the South Milledge Avenue exit.
  4. Turn left onto Milledge Avenue and travel to the fourth traffic signal.
  5. Turn right onto Lumpkin Street and travel to Baxter Street.
  6. Turn right into the Tate Center parking lot for hourly pay parking.

From the East (Augusta)

  1. Take I-20 East to Exit 172 in Thomson, Georgia.
  2. Turn right onto US 78. Follow US 78 into downtown Athens (Broad Street). You will pass the University of Georgia Arch on your left. The next street is Lumpkin Street.
  3. Turn left onto Lumpkin Street and travel approximately 1 mile to Baxter Street.
  4. Turn left into the Tate Center parking lot for hourly pay parking.

From the West (US 129 Jefferson/Gainesville):

  1. Cross over the Athens Perimeter Loop highway and continue towards downtown Athens. The street name will change to Prince Ave.
  2. At the fifth traffic signal turn right onto Milledge Avenue. Continue on Milledge Avenue through two traffic signals.
  3. At the third traffic signal (Broad Street) turn left and travel Broad Street to the third traffic signal (Lumpkin Street).
  4. Turn right onto to Lumpkin Street and travel approximately 1 mile to Baxter Street.
  5. Turn left into the Tate Center parking lot for hourly pay parking.
